1 Design Thinking in global health

2 Research Questions How were design thinking concepts, processes, methods and tools applied during each project stage: Problem definition; Solution identification; Intervention design; Implementation; and Evaluation? How were the results of design thinking used to modify the project? Problem definition; Solution identification; Intervention design; Implementation What did we do….and what difference did it make?

3 Research Questions (cont.)
What was the effect of applying design thinking to each program? Designer empathy for end user/target population? Fit of problem definition with target population/user desires, needs, and barriers to MNCH care? Fit of intervention with target population/user desires, needs, and barriers to MNCH care? User buy-in and sense of ownership of intervention? Pace of uptake of the ENCC intervention? What are lessons learned from applying design thinking to these programs? Q4) Examples include policy, economic, health systems, and other potential factors. Q5) (Problem definition; Solution identification; Intervention design; Implementation; and Evaluation)

4 Relationship of DTSI Themes: ENCC
Empathy Relationship of DTSI Themes: ENCC Empathy of designers for the end user needs and desires during the design phase. Stage beyond Buy-In. Emotional or behavioral acceptance of the model and further indicating that this the program is something they would fight to sustain through instituting structures, rules, and/or resources Indicates acceptance and utilization of the model, referrals, and/or social franchise by the TBAs or community Fit Uptake Buy-in Ownership Iteration Unintended Outcomes The ENCC model, referrals, or social franchise are addressing the expressed needs of the TBAs or the community identified through the application of the DT applied to the program development Indicates some positive, emotional or behavioral reaction to the model. ex: I really like being able to buy products from the TBAs and would recommend it to my neighbors Outcome Indicates the rate at which TBA services are being adopted by the community or provided by the TBAs that translates into buy-in and ownership (rate of diffusion). Possible DT related outcomes: TBAs embracing new role leading to a change in the community’s attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors. Pace
