Evaluation Question 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Goodwin's Principles  I have followed Goodwin's principles in a variety of ways.  We opted for a Narrative style of music Video as the lyrics portrayed a story and we had a perfect location for the video planned.  We almost amplified matching lyrics to visuals, as we used a variety of shots that matched the lyrics.  We didn't use many close ups of the artist this is because we thought that her music was sold on its beauty rather than the artists image.  I have created a visual style throughout all 3 products as I have kept it all very simple and natural.  Our editing matches the style of music perfectly with the use of long fades.

Magazine Advert and Digi-Pack  I used many of the conventions to create my Magazine and advert including: - Typeface - Image motifs - Layout is similar - Stuck to the same house colours - I used relatively the same amount of white space for each product. - I also included the correct amount of industry information on the products.

Collages  The following two collages show how similar my video is to Ellie Goulding’s Video for her new song called ‘Your Song’.  It shows how I have followed Goodwin's principles, as Ellie's Music is the same genre as Molly’s. Therefore their music videos should be similar in a way.  I hadn't seen this video until we had finished ours. Therefore I was very happy to see that they looked similar.  There are many parts of the video that make the two videos similar, it shows that my partner and I have stuck to many of the conventions of our genre of music.  The many things that are similar include: Setting Clothing Shots Special Effects such as Colourisation

My Video

Ellie Goulding’s Video

Setting Both my setting and Ellie’s are similar and this is because it matches the lyrics. Therefore it fits in with Goodwin's theory of matching the lyrics to visuals. In our song, Molly sings about taking walks, and therefore our actress is walking through the countryside. In Ellie's song she sings about how ‘wonderful the word is’ therefore what a better place than the countryside to have the video set.

Clothing We have used quite different clothing, but I think there is a reason for this. As when we Shot our video it wasn't that cold therefore we dressed our actress in clothing that matched the weather. Whereas in Ellie's Video it looks quite cold and therefore she would have of had to wear a coat. But overall both our clothing is similar as it has the same natural effect on the viewers eyes. It also fits the song’s genre as it is acoustic and also seen as natural.

Shots We have predominantly used Medium to Long shots and this is due to the narrative element in our video. In Ellie's Video they have also used lots of medium shots, but they have also used a lot more close up shots than we have. I think this is because she is more conscious of promoting herself and her image. Whereas we took the approach of telling a story. The close ups are mainly used when lip syncing, and this therefore matches lyrics to visuals in Goodwin's theory.

Special Effects As you can see, Ellie has used a vintage style colourisation and we have done exactly the same. This seems to run throughout the acoustic genre. This is due to the relaxed, old style feel of our songs. It looks like Ellie has used. a sepia style, whereas we have used the Aged Film style.
