The W3C and Web Standards  The W3C is working to make the web accessible to all users regardless of differences in:  Culture  Education  Ability  Resources  Physical Limitations

Advantages of Standards  Helps ensure webpages display consistently in all browsers.  Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and other browsers display the website exactly the same way.  Faster website development.  Faster downloading of websites.

Advantages of Standards continued  Equal access to information.  Differences in browser and/or operating system versions do not limit the user’s access to the site.  Differences in hardware do not limit the user’s access to the site.  Computer  PDA  Cell phone

Disadvantages of Standards  Restricts development  Web authors who want to use new technologies are prevented from doing so.  Use of these technologies is discouraged because viewer’s computer systems may not be compatible with the software or hardware used by the new technologies.  The new technologies are not essential.  Slows innovation

Section 508 Amendment to Rehabilitation Act  US Federal Agencies Must Provide:  Equal access to and use of information on their websites for individuals and employees with disabilities.  The information must be comparable to that provided to individuals and employees without disabilities.  Applies ONLY to the United States.
