Definition A Compound Sentence is a sentence that joins two simple sentences together with a comma, conjunction or semicolon.

Simple Sentence = Independent Clause

Compound Sentence = Independent Clause + Independent Clause

What? An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone. It is a group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought. An independent clause is a sentence.

Compound Sentences A compound sentence contains two independent clauses. Conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, and yet, so) join these independent clauses. (Hint: The conjunctions spell FANBOYS.) The conjunction used can impact the meaning of the sentence.

Sample Compound Sentences He is very ill but he goes to his work. There are many weaknesses in her character, yet I love her. He was inexperienced, so he suffered loss in business. His work was satisfactory, therefore he was given an increment.

Combining Clauses There are three ways to combine independent causes to make a compound sentence: Comma Conjunction Semicolon

Comma + Conjunction Eg. The teens walked to the park but it was closed. Eg. The gentleman did not know where the sound came from, so he hid behind the tree.

Semicolon You can also use a semicolon to create a compound sentence since the two statements are equal. Eg. The teacher applauded the class; the kids beamed with pride. Eg. The dog ate; the cat slept.

Compound-Complex Sentences A compound-complex sentence is a sentence that has at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

The subordinating conjunctions are used to introduce the dependent clauses. Subordinate Conjunction Eg. I didn't write the TCS aptitude test. I was topper of the class. Compound: I didn't write the TCS aptitude test because i was topper of the class.

The coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) are used for joining the independent clauses. Coordinating Conjunctions Eg. I want to work as an interpreter in the future. I am studying Russian at university. Compound: I want to work as an interpreter in the future, so I am studying Russian at university.

Sample Compound-Complex Sentences Although I like to go camping, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found anyone to go with. Independent clause: "I haven't had the time to go lately" Independent clause: "I haven't found anyone to go with" Dependent clause: "Although I like to go camping... "

We decided that the movie was too violent, but our children, who like to watch scary movies, thought that we were wrong. Independent clause: "We decided that the movie was too violent" Independent clause: "(but) our children thought that we were wrong" Dependent clause: who like to watch scary movies.

Simple --> Compound 1. The weather was very bad. They succeeded in scaling Mt. Everest ANS. The weather was very bad, still they succeeded in scaling Mt. Everest. 2. He was courteous and polite. He gained popularity. Ans. He was courteous and polite and hence he gained popularity.

3. He lost all his teeth. He cannot eat solid food. Ans. He lost all his teeth therefore he cannot eat solit food. 4. He wanted to win the prize. He worked hard. And. He wanted to win the prize, so he worked hard.

Identify the Compound and Compound-Complex Sentences Joe waited for the train, but the train was late. I looked for Mary and Samantha at the bus station, but they arrived at the station before noon and left on the bus before I arrived. I was eating sandwich and pizza together. If Barack Obama is re-elected this November, he'll serve another four years, but it won't be an easy contest to win.

I love English classes and I’ll be enrolling at Sharma classes later this week. The bird was sitting on his perch and he was happily eating his food, but then he fell. The car was stuck in the mud for a long time, much to my dismay, and the rain just kept falling. Can Johnny come out to play? His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling.
