FOSSIL FUELS A Fuel is any material that is burned to get energy. Fossil Fuels are fuels found in the Earth’s crust including: »Oil »Natural Gas »Coal Fossil fuels are formed from the prehistoric remains of plants and animals. They are NON RENEWABLE!

Oil (petroleum) Formed from the remains of algae and zooplankton at bottom of the sea. Thick, black substance Oil reserves may run out as early as 2039

 This oil rig extracts oil from the sea floor. What are some problems that might be encountered with this extraction process? Explosions, collapse of sea floor, stuck in the middle of the ocean!

Oil is separated into different compounds with a process called Fractional Distillation Write down 3 uses of oil

Coal Remember the carbon blocks we used to smelt the copper ore, that was coal! Is a flammable brown to black rock

Coal is formed by plant matter that gets buried and compressed for millions of years before turning into coal!

Coal is used to produce a majority of the world’s electricity What are some potential problems with burning coal and other fossil fuels? POLLUTION, we may run out

Natural Gas Often found with other fossil fuels Made primarily of a gas called methane Must be processed before it can be used

USES OF NATURAL GAS What are the 2 uses for natural gas?

Fossil fuels – burnt to get energy Oil – from algae remains – petrol/cars Coal – from plant remains – electricity Natural gas – methane – lighting/ heating SUMMARY
