Peaches Polar Vortex Hardiness Evaluation Ripening Calendar Drought Hangover Herbicide Damage
3
Polar Vortex 15 inches of snow on January 5 th Sub Zero temperatures January 5-7 Temperatures ranged from -20 to -12 on the night of January 6/7. Almost complete crop loss, harvested about 10% of average bushels
4
Hardiness A few surprises. – Bounty was very good, but also planted in good sites – Starfire was mixed, but overall looks tough – Loring bloomed but did not set – PF-24C performed below average – Gloria was tough
5
Hardiness Evaluation Apples will have a large crop Strawberries have a good potential Blueberries are ok Annuals are not planted yet
6
Drought Hangover 2013 trees performed well but not enough shoot growth Young orchards were still behind until 2014 Drought stressed plantings benefited from crop failure Winter of 2015 is best trees have looked since 2011
7
Herbicide Damage Used weed mat to protect young replant trees Matting acted as a wick with herbicide Lots of trees lost

Fuji vs. Braeburn
14
New Varieties Pixie Crunch – Great texture and flavor – Hangs on the tree forever – Ripens a little earlier than Jonathon Evercrisp – Great texture and flavor – Long hang time – Ripens one week before Fuji
15
Sun Burn and Delay Raynox has shown some good results on sun burn – Apply like sun screen, coverage lasts two weeks max – Start Early – golf ball stage and temps 90+ ReTain has been effective holding apples on tree Great way to spread our crop for PYO
