4 Objective Explain what the Indian Removal Act was and analyze excerpts from the document. You will do this by reading from the original text as well as applying knowledge already learned in class

5 Worcester vs. Georgia Cherokee sued the government of Georgia for taking their land Worcester vs. Georgia - Supreme Court rules Georgia’s actions are illegal and that the Cherokee can stay

6 Indian Removal Act (pg. 30) Signed into law by Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830, authorizing the president to grant unsettled lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders.

8 Indian Removal Act (pg. 30) A few tribes went peacefully (and many voluntarily), but many in Southeast resisted the relocation policy Poor mistreatment from the whites Jackson was patronizing

9 Indian Removal Act Seminoles and Creeks resisted Cherokees tricked, Chickasaws eventually went too Removed 46,000 Natives/spent $10 million to do so

12 Trail of Tears During the fall and winter of 1838 and 1839, the Cherokees were forcibly moved west by the United States government. Approximately 4,000 Cherokees died on this forced march, which became known as the "Trail of Tears.
