Standout Technical Designers Presentation Outline Problem Statement/Constraints Design Options Design Selection Design layout Analysis Fabrication Testing Results Recommendation Concluding Remarks

Standout Technical Designers Problem Statement/Constraints 1) Problem Statement Design a new tape blade with a minimum standout of at least 10 ft while adhering to the defined problem constraints. 2) Problem Constraints Do not infringe on current patents <1.100’’ blade width (flattened) <0.0048’’ blade thickness Must fit within a 3.14’’x 3.14’’ x 1.9’ case Remain with 2x current blade cost Easy to use and lightweight Must be safte

Standout Technical Designers Design Options Physical parameters of the garage door 8 feet wide & 7 feet high Overall door weight 110 pounds 4 panels= each 21 inches in height Overall weight of each panel=27.5 pounds Torsion spring= 302 Stainless Wire A313 Assumptions for analysis No friction between the wheels and the track Weight acts from the center of the panel Roller bearings have no friction Velocity of the door is constant as it travels up Force applied to connecting arm Figure 3: Motion of the Garage Door at 3 stages

Standout Technical Designers Design Selection

Standout Technical Designers Design layout Relationship of panel to track curve: Radius of the curve is smaller than the length of a single panel--allows only a single roller to be in the curve at a time. One roller means there will be a maximum of two panels in the curve. Setting the arc length to 23.349 inches allows a single roller to complete the entire arc while the panel is at a 45 degree angle Arc length=23.349 inches Figure 8: Relationship of panel to track

Standout Technical Designers Design Analysis 1)Material Removal: Shape: Circles Diameter size: 0.236’’ Distance between circles from center: 0.472’’ 2)Coiled Wire Support: Coil thickness: 0.04 Coil length: 3 ft Coil Material: 20 AWG Copper wire 3)Blade: Material: 1095 steel Blade length: 25 ft Width: 1.0096’’ Thickness: 0.0048’’

Standout Technical Designers Fabrication Torsional Spring The torsion spring supported by spring coils, stationary cone and a winding cone spring is mounted on a stationary metal shaft located above and parallel to the top of the garage door frame. The spring extend along the shaft, and work by twisting as the garage door closes by means of cables attached to each side of the lowest garage door panel. Metal shaft supported by roller bearing which allows the shaft to spin smoothly Spring force=3.8 lbf/in Max force acting on bearings=46.4 pounds Bearing selected: 1’’ bore, 2’’ outer diameter and support a load up to 400 lbs

Standout Technical Designers Testing Results Trolley Arm Convert to a 2-force link Length – 20.615 in Trolley Force Exerted on Door The maximum force required by the motor will occur at one of two points: 1.When the door is completely closed. 2.When the door is fully open. This force is a function of the angle maintained by the trolley arm
