5. loam When planting our garden, we used loam to put around our plants in hopes of having a better harvest. rich type of soil containing equal amounts of sand and soil, some with small amounts of clay

6. litter Rain forests have very fertile soil due to the decomposition of the leaf litter. a layer of slightly decayed material just above the soil layer

7. decomposer Material is broken down in an ecosystem by a decomposer. type of organism that breaks down dead, decaying things

8. physical map We found various landforms labeled on the physical map. type of map that indicates landforms and bodies of water with color or labels

9. landforms Mountains, peninsulas, rivers, and plateaus are just a few examples of landforms. physical geographical features found on Earth

10. political map We saw the United States and its states, Canada and its provinces and territories, and Mexico and its states labeled on our classroom’s North American political map. map that indicate political boundaries of continents, countries, or states and territories

11. population density map Each of the colors represent a different amount of people living in the country on the population density map. a map that typically uses color to indicate the amount of people living in a certain area or space

12. mountain As we go up the mountain, our elevation and altitude begins to increase. a landform of higher elevation or altitude

13. peninsula Florida is an example of a peninsula. landform surrounded on three sides by water

14. continent We will study the continents of North and South America, Europe, and Australia in sixth grade. one of the seven largest landmasses on Earth

15. country North America is made up of our country, U.S.A., and Mexico and Canada. political division of some continents around the world that are distinguished by having their own government system

16. nation We pledge our allegiance to our nation, the United States of America. political division of citizens united under a governmental unit
