Vocabulary - Organization paragraph - a group of sentence focused on a point as expressed in the topic sentence. topic sentence - a sentence in a paragraph which clearly states the point of the paragraph. supporting information (proof) - examples, comparisons, descriptions, and other sentences which expand on the topic sentence

Vocabulary - Organization multi-paragraph documents - documents that have more than one paragraph such as business documents (letters, feasibility reports, and inter-office memoranda), informational documents (newspaper or encyclopedia articles or essays), "how-to" documents, and academic essays.

Vocabulary - Organization business letter - a letter used in business; includes letterhead, inside address, salutation, body, and closing. inter-office memorandum - document designed for communications within a business, generally without formal letterhead and uses to, from, date, and re instead of formal presentation of letter.

Vocabulary - Organization "how-to" documents - instructions for how to complete or accomplish a specific task informational documents - newspaper and encyclopedia articles and other documents designed to convey information academic essays - a formal essay in a specific organizational style and which includes an introduction paragraph with a thesis, body paragraphs which prove the thesis, and a concluding paragraph which sums up proof and/or restates thesis and makes a statement of significance.

Vocabulary - Organization effective text divisions - the use of paragraphs for specific purposes in documents unity - where all the sentences in a paragraph focus on the topic sentence and all the paragraphs work to focus on the point of the document coherence - where each sentence and each paragraph flows logically one to the other.

Vocabulary - Organization transitions - words and word groups which help the logical flow of one sentence to the other and one paragraph to the other within a document to help create unity and coherence misplaced and dangling modifiers - where modifiers either are not placed or are not phrased to make clear what they are modifying sentence variety - the use of different sentence types to create an interesting document
