Gases in the atmosphere absorb radiation Green House effect Aziz AlSa’ad-Nasser Alabduljaleel-Abdulkareem AbuTaleb-Aziz AlOthman

2 1.3 Vocabulary Ultraviolet radiation:rays of light that cannot be seen and that are a little bit shorter than the rays of violet light Infrared radiation:Radiation of lower frequencies than visible light Ozone:A gas molecule that consists of of three oxygen atoms GreenHouse effect:The process by which certain gases in a planets atmosphere absorb and emit infrared radiation resulting in an increase in surface temperature. Greenhouse gas:Carbon dioxide and methane that absorbs and give off infrared radiation as part of the green house effect.

3 Gases can absorb and give off radiation
Radiation can be un-hearable and invisible, sounds can be too loud to hear just like they’re too low to hear sometimes Waves of ultraviolet radiation have more energy than the light you can see. Ultraviolet radiation can cause damage to living things

4 The ozone layer protects life from harmful radiation
The ozone layer is a layer that protects life from harmful ultraviolet radiation, its molecule is (O3) is made up of three atoms of the element oxygen. How the ozone layer works is that it absorbs all the harmful ultraviolet radiation that the sun gives off.The reason why we do not want ultraviolet radiation given off by the sun to reach the earth is because this type of radiation can cause skin cancer, damaged eyesight, sunburns, harm crops. Although it stops ultraviolet radiation it lets other types of radiation that a human needs pass through like visible light.

5 The greenhouse effect keeps Earth warm
Certain gases in the atmosphere slow the movement of energy away from earths surface.Gases absorb and release infrared radiation which keeps energy in earth’s system for a while. It was called “the green house effect” by scientests because it reminded them of the way glass traps all the warmth inside a greenhouse.

6 greenhouse gases Like i explained in the Vocabulary section green house gases are Carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and other gases that absorb and give off infrared radiation. Unlike the glass roof and walls of a greenhouse, the greenhouse gases dont form a single layer, theyre all mixed with nitrogen, oxygen, and a couple other gases in the air.

8 Interesting facts about Radiation
All the flags placed on the moon are all clear white because of radiation. Radium was discovered by a woman who goes by the name Marie Curie who actually died of Radiation. Grand Central Station in New York has more radiation levels then allowed in nuclear plants . This is due to use of granite when this station was getting built.

9 Review What is the ozone layer? What does the ozone layer do?
In what ways does radiation harm a living thing? How was the name greenhouse effect made?
