CVDI is a collaboration between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette & Drexel University A National Science Foundation Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center Example #1 1 Quad Chart No follow-on slides Presenter talked through each quadrant

CVDI is a collaboration between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette & Drexel University A National Science Foundation Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center Ontology and Model based Visualization System Objectives – Enhance semantic indexing through the integration of neural science ontologies, brain models, and research literature. – Support semantic discovery through ontology mapping and visualization Novelty/Approaches – Annotation – Automatically concept identification from multiple ontologies – Mapping – mapping concept terms to brain models through document collections – Visualization – interactive visual displays of concept and document relationships Deliverables Benefits to Industry – Make effective use of ontologies – Apply both classification and self- organization for document management – Learn from brain maps for information organization

CVDI is a collaboration between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette & Drexel University A National Science Foundation Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center Example #2 1 Quad Chart 3 follow-on slides Presenter blazed through Quad Chart, then talked quickly through each slide Too much info

CVDI is a collaboration between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette & Drexel University A National Science Foundation Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center Data Analyst Performance Augmentation OBJECTIVE Better balance the flow of information so that technology systems adapt the form, quantity, and selection of information for analysts. Approach DELIVERABLES Prototype workflows that demonstrate research benefits of specific adaptations for analysts. We have made great strides in measuring humans, now we need to show how adaptive designs provide benefit BENEFITS TO INDUSTRY Increased effectiveness and efficiency of data analysts working with “big data” where speed and performance matter Cyber, health, intel/ surveillance/ recon (ISR), FAA, unmanned systems Overload becomes managed information flow

CVDI is a collaboration between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette & Drexel University A National Science Foundation Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center Data Analyst Performance Augmentation Problem Statement Volume of data is increasing exponentially across every major industry, and analysts struggle to process this data in a timely manner. People still play the major role in making decisions using this data, and we don’t have enough experts to throw at the new data. Though we have made progress providing tools and visualizations to improve analysis and decision making, we are ignoring the “H” in Human- Computer Interaction and can do more.

CVDI is a collaboration between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette & Drexel University A National Science Foundation Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center Use neuro-, physio-, and context sensors to measure the human and his/her environment Smart algorithms estimate the state of the individuals Context-aware technology systems provide more appropriate information, better-timed alerts, context- aware visualizations, etc. Overload becomes managed information flow Data Analyst Performance Augmentation Vision

CVDI is a collaboration between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette & Drexel University A National Science Foundation Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center Data Analyst Performance Augmentation For example Dec, 2013: Metro-North train derailed in the Bronx killing 4 passengers and injuring 59 others. Engineer went into daze and approached 30mph curve doing 82mph. (engagement) Nov, 2010: F-22 crashed in Alaska wilderness. Report determined that pilot’s oxygen system shut down, pilot became hypoxic and steered the plane into the ground. (Hb/HbO 2 ) Tomorrow: Use context-aware sensing to better understand what information on the screen people use, when they are focused and shouldn’t be interrupted, when their shift should change, etc.

CVDI is a collaboration between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette & Drexel University A National Science Foundation Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center Somewhere in between these extremes is ideal.
