Setting (video 4.2) At the end of this presentation you will understand a bit more on why setting is so important to a novel and how to fill out the section in the packet for setting.

Novel Project Packet Directions: select a minimum of three settings that are used in your novel to help tell the story. Title each “setting” and use a couple descriptive words for each and you could even draw a picture or use a picture from the internet to help add visuals to what that setting looked like. Include a paragraph explaining why these settings were important to the novel.

What does it look like in the packet:

Definition of setting… The place or type of surroundings where the story takes place. Why is setting so important in stories? Setting often describes the character and their upbringing, people’s actions are often determined because they are the products of their society. What and where they live really matters. It helps create interest It allows the author to give you clues and hints about what is happening in the story. It allows the characters to interact with their environment

Example Using “The Veldt”: Hadley KitchenNursery Living Room *Stove that cooks food for the family. *Dinning room table that serves the family *Family has conversations here *Walls and Ceilings are interactive TV *Odorphonic s, sonics *lions *Artificial intelligence *Kills parents *Peter and Wendy throw a temper tantrum when they find out the house might be turned off

Example Using “The Veldt” The setting in the story “The Veldt” is extremely important because the house is both the setting, where the story is taking place, but it is also the cause of all the families problems and issues. It also becomes almost another character in the story, as Peter and George have conversations with it, trying to get what they want out of the nursery. In the end the nursery, a room, seems to come to life and eat the parents. The resolution of the conflicts in this story are resolved due to the house. Without the setting the story couldn’t happen at all.

You are finished! Don’t forget to fill in the digital WSQ! And if you feel like you know more how to fill in the novel packet go take a look at that in notability!
