UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING Presented by Ezra Jonah Greene Walden University 2013

UDL or Universal Design for learning is a set of guidelines/principles for curriculum development. It is a blueprint for providing flexible approaches to teaching and learning that meet the needs of all learners

UDL’S INSPIRATION see full video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaSZqgr2eUM or click on this link UDL Inspiration http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaSZqgr2eUMUDL Inspiration

WHY IS UDL RELEVANT TO LEARNING? What does Brain Research Say? Brain research revealed three networks for learning. Each network promotes a principle that encourages better learning for students. The following chart demonstrates this

Brain Research and UDL Recognition Networks Strategic Networks Affective Networks The “what” of learning must be supported by multiple means of representation The “how” of learning must be supported by action and expression The “why” of learning provides choice or options that is supported by Engagement

How can UDL support the curriculum? Use the following hyperlink to see what Dr. Hartman had to say on how UDL supports the curriculum UDL approach to curriculum UDL approach to curriculum

THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN DEVELOPING A Universal Design for Learning

As technology becomes more a part of our students’ lives, we must make an even greater effort to utilize it effectively in our classrooms. If it is to be effective, technology must be carefully adapted into the curriculum; it must be used to support teaching and learning. REMEMBER…

TECHNOLOGY COLLAGE

What is the way forward? Don’t let the curriculum lead you, you lead it. Make adaptions or build curriculum that meet the needs of all learner. Imagine yourself to be a scientist, use your knowledge of brain research to guide your practice. Remember use multiple means of presentation, expression and action and engagement. Technology aids UDL not controls it. Use technology to support teaching and learning. Find a supporting cast, don’t forget the power of collegial support. Never forget your role as a teacher in building eternity.

Study those and see if you could up with some authentic ideas of your own. Collaborate with one of your colleagues and see a new world of teaching and learning unfold.
