THE BICEP MUSCLE “I DO CURLS FOR THE GIRLS!”
2
The Bicep actually consists of THREE difference muscles: Biceps Brachii Brachialis Brachioradialis
3
Attaches to the Radius (forearm bone) and originates at the Scapula (shoulder blade) in two places Runs along the anterior (front) side of the Humerus (bone connecting the elbow and shoulder joints)
4
FUNCTIONS: The primary function of the Bicep muscle is to move the forearm towards the shoulder (elbow FLEXION). The secondary function of the Bicep is SUPINATION of the forearm. This means turning the hand from a palms-down position to a palms-up position. What Does the Bicep Muscle Do?
5
FLEXIONSUPINATION
6
Bicep Tendonitis (inflammation of the tendon) Caused by excessive use and repetition of overhead movements such as in throwing, racket sports or swimming. Often develops as a result of a shoulder injury. Tearing the Muscle Often closer to the elbow (usually caused by improper weight lifting techniques) Tearing the Bicep Tendon Often closer to the shoulder (usually as a result of arthritis in older men)
7
Be sure to always properly warm up the muscle before lifting or performing a sport that involves excessive overhead or flexion motions. Make sure you are using proper lifting techniques and correct range of motion when doing bicep exercises.
