Features 1.Posting Assignments : Instructor can use the Assignments tool to post assignments and allow students to download documents. Instructors can download all submitted files at once via a zip file. Rubrics available for grading. Self and peer assessment available. 2. Dropbox : Electronically exchange files between the instructor and individual students or groups. 3. Creating Groups : Groups can be created within sites giving the instructor the ability to target select sub-groups for communication and content. Instructors can create groups for student teams giving them their own separate site, including group email, file exchange area, discussion board, chat area etc.
4
4. Tests and quizzes: Randomize questions within quiz. Randomize answers for each multiple choice question. 5. Incorporating video : Videos can be uploaded to a course, however, is recommended to embed the video instead of uploading it. 6. Discussion boards : Create discussion forums and topics within them enabling students to respond to individual messages. Enable students to create new topics.
5
7.Collaboration tools like blogs, wikis etc. : Create blogs for students to share information with site participants. Create Journals for private communication between instructor and student. Drawbacks 1. Sakai is Java-based as opposed to LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP). Java servers and developers are typically more expensive than PHP ones. 2.Sakai serves a narrower clientele and so there is not as broad a community of support, plugins and add-ons as there is with Moodle, for instance.
