Are there cogs beneath the wind? In the story there are two worlds. One of these worlds is the clockwork world. Every morning, before sleeping people wake, the world is wound up like a clock. Tightly, tightly it is turned and then released, making the day proceed cog-like. Everything happens predictably, nothing is accidental, the whole day unwinds in an orderly tick tock way. There is another world very different to this. This is the windswept world. Every morning, before sleeping people wake, rather than being wound up the would is shaken up, as if it were a giant snow globe. The day then proceeds swirling. Everything happens randomly, little is predictable, the whole day unfurls in a disorderly swish-swosh way. Whereas the Clockwork world is full of sense, the Windswept world is full of surprise. And although the Clockwork world is tidy, the Windswept world is a mess. In the Clockwork world laws determine what will happen, but in the Windswept world it is all a matter of luck. The Clockwork world is full of knowledge; the Windswept world has only guesses. In the Windswept world people walk around with their fingers permanently crossed, but in the Clockwork world they believe a thorough plan in all one needs. The Clockwork world is folded and neat. The Windswept world is tangled in heaps.

Are there cogs beneath the wind? Which of these worlds is our world most like? Which world would you rather live in? Which of these is the most: a)Happy? b)Dangerous? c)Perfect? In which world does this belong? a)Choice b)Natural disasters c)Birthdays d)Thoughts and wishes e)Time f)Adventure g)Right and wrong

Free Will Learning Objective: What is free will and would the world be a better place without it? I can explain why God created humans with free will I can define the term free will I can evaluate whether the world would be better without free will

Free Will What is Free Will? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6et2ZSodS0g

Free Will Keyword- Free Will The ability to make our own choices and to accept the consequences of the choices we make Christians believe… God created humans God made humans special by giving us freewill Freewill allows people to make their own choices and mistakes (It’s what makes us unique) People often make mistakes or wrong choices which leads to suffering and problems God loves people and does not want them to suffer but accepts this is a consequence of giving humans free will Think back to the story at the beginning of the lesson, in which world do you think people have free will?

Free Will and Suffering Listen to the Black Eyed Peas song – Where is the love? As you are listening mind map the examples of suffering that you see in the video Colour code the examples of suffering – divide them into categories. Which are caused by people, which are caused by God? What about natural disasters? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc

So, why didn’t God design people so they wouldn’t make mistakes? Would God have been more caring by making humans without freewill?

Would it be better without free will? Immy’s Interesting Invention Immy is concerned that too many people lie to each other, steal from others and generally harm other people when they shouldn’t. To combat this worry – a worry that many people share with him – and being also a scientist and inventor, Immy has come up with what he thinks is a solution to the problem. He has invented a tiny device that can be implanted into our heads, and once implanted will stop anyone with the implant from being able to do certain things, no matter what the circumstances. Immy suggests programming the device to stop us from doing the following things because he thinks they are things that no one should ever do: 1)Lying 2)Stealing 3)Causing harm to others That would mean that once the device has been implanted into your head you would be simply unable to lie, steal or cause harm to others. If you tried them your tongue, your hands – or whatever it is – would simply stop working.

Questions to Consider What is more important, freedom or the greater good? Some people think that there are certain things you should never do, under any circumstances, such as killing. Are they right? Is it right for our freedom to be limited so that we behave better? Is it right that we have freedom to do as we please even if others are harmed as a result? Would it better if we had no power of choice but always did the right thing?

Unit Overviews You are now going to complete your unit overview for this lesson. 1)On your continuum line place a cross to show your opinion on the question ‘Does God exist?’ Has this lesson on Free Will changed your mind? 2)In the box explain whether you think God should have created us with free will? x I think God was right to create us with free will because it is important for us to make our own choices as this is what makes us human and makes us special.
