What is stress? Stress is the loudest part (or syllable) of a word. A syllable is a sound. Say your name. If it has more than one syllable, one will be louder than the others. Listen closely and say it again.

Rule #1 If a word ends… …with a vowel or the letter n or s, the stress falls on the second to last syllable. Ej: cho co la te es ta cion am ien to ge me los

Rule #2 If a word ends… …with a consonant other than n or s, the stress falls on the last syllable. Ej: co mu ni dad tra ba ja dor es pa ñol

Rule #3 If a word has an accent mark,… …the stress falls on the syllable that carries the mark. This rule overrides the others. An accent mark is different than a tilde. Can you tell the difference? Ñ ñ á é í ó ú Ej: te le vi sión ca pí tu lo pa na de ría

Underline the syllable that gets the stress and write the rule number. 1. biología 2. acuario 3. profesores 4. simpático 5. equatorial
