2 Progress of Technology through Time ENIAC   Current Technology Composed of 17,000 vacuum tubes, 70,000 resistors, and 10,000 capacitors, the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) weighed over 30 tons and took up 1800 square feet of floor space. Completed in 1945, the ENIAC was used for ballistics work and later on for weather prediction. Today’s technology uses vast numbers of electronic components in the form of miniaturized integrated circuits contained on silicon chips. Modern day desk calculators exceed ENIAC’s computational power and speed by far. ©Elaine Lee, September, 2001

3 The MITS Altair 8800 was a microcomputer design from 1975 based on the Intel 8080 CPU and sold by mail order through advertisements in Popular Electronics, Radio-Electronics and other hobbyist magazines. The designers hoped to sell only a few hundred build-it-yourself kits to hobbyists, and were surprised when they sold thousands in the first month. [1] The Altair also appealed to individuals and businesses who just wanted a computer and purchased the assembled version. [2] Today the Altair is widely recognized as the spark that led to the microcomputer revolution of the next few years: The computer bus designed for the Altair was to become a de facto standard in the form of the S-100 bus, and the first programming language for the machine was Microsoft's founding product, Altair BASICMITSmicrocomputerIntel 8080CPUPopular ElectronicsRadio-Electronics [1] [2]microcomputer revolutioncomputer busde factoS-100 busMicrosoftAltair BASIC

7 Internet vs.Intranet Internet (need to get linked online) – www – Every computer linked together on the world wide web (or in the whole world) – No security or privacy Intranet (need to get linked online) – Every computer linked together for one business (can be in more than 1 building, in more than 1 city, in more than 1 state, or in more than 1 country) – Strong security (firewall) Need an account & password
