YOUR Rights as Christian Students in Public Schools

May I use a pencil or notebook with a Christian slogan or Bible verse printed on it? YES You have the First Amendment right of free speech and religious expression. You would not be disrupting class by using these.

May I wear a tee-shirt with a Bible verse printed on it? YES Shirts with printed messages are forms of symbolic speech protected by the First Amendment. You still have to follow your school’s uniform or dress code policy.

May I give out invitations to church activities to my classmates? YES First Amendment rights include the right to distribute religious literature as long as it does not cause a disruption.

May I witness to my classmates about Jesus or pray with other students on the school campus? YES You can do this before or after school, lunch, recess, or anytime you are given free time to talk. Be Christ-like when you witness to others!

May I say grace before eating lunch? YES Freedom of speech includes the freedom to pray. You can even bow your head to pray before tests.

May I read the Bible during the school day? YES Anytime you have free time or free- choice reading (SSR, DEAR, etc.) you may choose to read the Bible.
