COPY DATE, TOPIC & OBJECTIVE ON PG. 38 Date: 12.10.15 Topic: Cell Membrane & Active Transport Objective: To Understand the structure of the cell membrane and its importance in regulating substances across. Ch. 4 Quiz, TOMORROW, Dec. 11 th 2015 COPY& ANS.DO-NOW, COPY EXIT TICKET & HW ON PG. 37 Do Now: Update TOC We know that the cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell. How do you think the cell gets substances it needs into & out of the cell? HW: STUDY FOR CH. 4 QUIZ! 1) Complete cell membrane coloring wksht. 1)Signed Science Project Paperwork. 2)Complete Science Fair Project document. Share with Dr. B. Exit Ticket: Summarize everything you learnt today in 5-6 sentences

Plasma Membrane Basic fluid mosaic model https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qqsf_UJcfB c Plasma Membrane (5’)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moPJkCb KjBs Active & passive transport (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfy92hd aAH0)

Cell membranes are Phospholipid Bilayers a. 2 layers of phospholipids b. Proteins embedded in membrane c. Carbohydrate markers on cell surface d. Cholesterol to keep the membrane fluid

Functions of the Cell Membrane 1. Protect cell 2. Control incoming and outgoing substances 3. Maintain ion concentrations of various substances 4. Selectively (Semi) permeable - allows some molecules in, others are kept out

Fluid Mosaic Model – the cell membrane is not fixed- proteins “float” in the membrane

3 Types of Passive Transport Passive Transport Does NOT require energy Moves molecules from HIGH  LOW 1.Diffusion- the movement of molecules from HIGH  LOW 2.Facilitated Diffusion -with the help of transport proteins a.Transport Proteins are specific – they “select” only certain molecules to cross the membrane b.Transports larger or charged molecules 3. Osmosis – the movement of water from high  low concentration

Active Transport REQUIRES energy Moves molecules from LOW  HIGH 1. Endocytosis: taking bulky material into a cell Cell membrane in-folds around particle How a cell gets food or other large molecules it needs

Active Transport 3. Exocytosis: Forces material out of cell The membrane surrounding the material fuses with cell membrane. This is how a cell gets rid of waste.

COPY DATE, TOPIC & OBJECTIVE ON PG. 40 Date: 12.11.15 Topic: Ch. 4 Quiz Objective: To take a summative assessment on everything we learnt in ch. 4 so far COPY& ANS.DO-NOW, COPY EXIT TICKET & HW ON PG. 37 Do Now: Update TOC 5min. Ch.4 notes and worksheet review. HW: 1) Signed Science Project Paperwork. 2) Complete Science Fair Project document WITH A DETAILED EXPERIMENTAL PLAN. Share with Dr. B. Exit Ticket: Rate the quiz Too Easy Just Right Too Hard Why?
