St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and situated on the Neva River. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great as the “Window to Europe”. Thousands of workmen built a new city on the swampy land. Peter the Great was in a hurry. The work was fast and hard and workmen died.

In 1712 Saint Petersburg became the capital. St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia from 1712 till 1918. When the First World War began in 1914 St. Petersburg, was changed to Petrograd. After the October Revolution the city was renamed after Lenin (Leningrad). In 1991 the old name of St. Petersburg was returned to the city.

During the Great Patriotic War Leningrad was cut off from the rest of the country and people suffered and died of starvation. The city is called Northern Venice because there are 65 rivers, arms and canals with artistically decorated bridges. Saint-Petersburg is also famous for its «white nights».

St. Petersburg was founded on May, the 27th, 1703. The founder of Petersburg Peter I laid down the aims: to modernize economy of Russia and to establish close economic, technical and cultural interaction with more developed countries of Europe.
