1. Warm up- The concept that color and musical harmony are linked has a long history, intriguing scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton. Can you think of any music elements (note, bass clef, treble clef, beat, rhythm staccato, crescendo, etc) that parallel with the elements/principles of visual art?(color, line, shape, form etc)

2. What type of music (style, beat, rhythm etc.) do you associate with each of these paintings? 1.Carravagio, Baroque 2. Monet, Impressionism 3. Kandinsky, Abstract Expressionism

3. Both of these works include pattern. Compare and contrast the way each artist has used pattern.

8. Warm up: Look at the way Kandinsky incorporated pattern into his non objective painting. What elements of art did he repeat in order to create a planned or random pattern?

9. Warm up: Get out your final Non Objective thumbnails or your painting (if you have begun), answer these questions and then begin your project! How does the thumbnail you chose show rhythm? How does it show pattern? How does your idea show movement? What color scheme will you use? What is the song you chose to work with and how does the song relate to the choice of color/line/shape etc?

10. Starting your Non-objective Painting: The paintings will be Kandinsky inspired. You will listen to a piece of music (either from your own i-pod or from my selection) In your sketchbook you will compose 3-4 rough sketch compositions using mainly non-representational symbols. Your work may be geometric, organic or a combination of both. You will be focusing on relating the musical piece to the elements/principles of art. Focus on: The mood/feeling of the piece in relationship to the elements of visual art color/line/shape/texture. Arranging these elements using interesting positive and negative space. Work MUST show rhythm/pattern/movement/unity and balance. Focal point or contrast are optional. Think about pattern and repetition of the elements so that it’s either planned or very random.

11. “Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.” Kandinsky used color in a highly theoretical way associating tone with timbre (the sound's character), hue with pitch, and saturation with the volume of sound. 17. Look at the work by Kandinsky. You may either: 1. Analyze the work (explain how the elements are organized using the principles) or 2. Relate the elements of this artwork to the elements of music that you imagine Kandinsky was listening to in order to create this painting.

20. Robert Rauschenberg. Bed. 1955. Combine painting: oil and pencil on pillow, quilt, and sheet on wood supports Warm up: Read BELOW and study the artwork. Do you consider this “combine” to be fine art? Bed is one of Robert Rauschenberg's first Combines, the artist's term for his technique of attaching cast–off items, such as tires or old furniture, to a traditional support. In this case he framed a well–worn pillow, sheet, and quilt, scribbled on them with pencil, and splashed them with paint, in a style reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism. Legend has it that these bedclothes are Rauschenberg's own. The work is thus as personal as a self–portrait, or more so—a quality consistent with Rauschenbergs statement, "Painting relates to both art and life.... (I try to act in that gap between the two.)"

21. RAUSCHENBERG, Robert Bed,1955,Combine painting Rauschenberg's enthusiasm for popular culture and his rejection of the angst and seriousness of the Abstract Expressionists led him to search for a new way of painting. He found his signature mode by embracing materials traditionally outside of the artist's reach. He would cover a canvas with house paint, or ink the wheel of a car and run it over paper to create a drawing, while demonstrating rigor and concern for formal painting. By 1958, at the time of his first solo exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery, his work had moved from abstract painting to drawings like "Erased De Kooning" (1953) (which was exactly as it sounds) to what he termed "combines." These combines (meant to express both the finding and forming of combinations in three-dimensional collage) cemented his place in art history.

29. Storm Thorgerson (born 1944) English Graphic Designer. Identifying the pop culture of the 70's throughout and into the 80's, 90's and into the 21st Century. Creating visually beautiful and interesting art, Storm's work has been featured on a variety of singles, album and CD covers, as well as posters. He is the author of several books, including Mind Over Matter, Walk Away Renee, the Album Cover Album series, Eye of the Storm and 100 Best Album Covers.
