 CONTENTS:  Childhood  Early Life  Facts  Invention  First Flight  Conclusion An Invention that changed the world. The Aeroplane

 Orville and Wilbur's fascination with flight began with a present their father gave them—a flying toy like a helicoptor from France. The young boys (7 and 11) were thrilled to make the little toy fly across the room, so much so that they broke it. They remembered how it looked, though, and promised each other that someday they would fly in the air, just like the little toy.  Wilbur was born in 1867 in Indiana. Orville was born in 1871 in Ohio. Their father was a Bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. The Wrights had five children.  The boys were always interested in mechanical things and flight. Orville sold kites at school to make money. Wilbur started reading all about how birds flew and how machines worked. Orville Wilbur

 Though the boys were good students, neither graduated from high school. Wilbur was hit in the face with a baseball bat when he was a teenager and suffered from irregular heartbeats the rest of his life. Wilbur and his mother got TB but they both recovered and he then stayed at home to care for his mother.  They opened a bicycle shop. They were both very good mechanics and could fix just about anything anyone asked them to fix.  It was in the bicycle shop that the idea of the airplane was born.  The Wright Brothers made kites, very large ones. By 1900, they were making ones so large that people could nearly fly in them. These were called gliders. They ran a successful Bicycle Shop Business and also made huge kites. They made their first plane in the Bicycle shop

The Wright Brothers were INCREDIBLE!! They figured out that the world would desperately need airplanes. Airplanes are used for many purposes. They are used for travelling to different countries and visiting people all over the world. Earth became a much smaller place as you could now travel long distances quite quickly. Before the plane, people only travelled by slow boats, cars or trains taking weeks and often months to reach far away places. Their father often disagreed with the Wright Brothers and said “it was impossible for men to fly in the sky like birds.”

 They started experimenting with the idea of flight in their bicycle shop by studying flight patterns of birds and experimenting with mechanical parts.  Their shop was very successful and funded the costs to build their first Airplane.  They spent long hours designing and building this themselves.  The propeller was made to catch the air and shoot it towards the plane. This caused the plane to lift off the ground and thrust forward.  Their plane had the first engine with 12 horse power ever in the world, the planes wingspan was 40 feet and weighed 605 pounds. The Wright Brothers in their Plane.

 Their first flight using an engine was at Kitty Hawk beach, North Carolina on 17 th December 1903 at 10.35am.  They flew 4 flights on this very important day.  The longest flight was 852 feet  Only 2 newspapers covered this very important moment in history.  Some accused the Brothers of lying. From then on, they only flew the plane with a crowd watching. The First Flight The First Plane

The Wright brothers became famous for making the first airplane in the world. In 1909, President Roosevelt paid them to build planes for the U.S Army. In 1912 Wilbur died aged only 45 years old from Typhoid fever. Orville later retired and died at the age of 76 in 1948. The Wright brothers made history and changed the world. They were amazing men! I HOPE YOU ENJOYED MY PROJECT. BY ALANNA MCENTAGGART.
