Common Gauges Common Gauges: 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 27 Large gauge needles The lower the number, the larger the gauge 16, 18, 20 Used for horses, swine, and cattle Small gauge needles The higher the number, the smaller the gauge 21, 22, 23, 25, 27 Used for cats, dogs, and exotic animals

Syringes Most common syringe sizes are insulin: 1, 3, 6, 12, 20, 35, and 60 ml. The 1 ml syringes are called tuberculin syringes The smallest syringe is the insulin syringe Insulin syringes come with attached needles and are measured in increments called units

Syringes Luer-Lok tip: has a threaded tip to hold needles securely Slip tip: this is the standard syringe tip Eccentric tip: used to get a straighter angle for IV injections Catheter tip: used to administer oral medications and liquefied food
