Study: Reading Key to Success

Before reflection Before reading “______(article title)_______,” I should reflect on how I feel about reading and how much it will determine success in school now and later. I believe that ____(what you feel about reading)______. I have come to believe this because ____(why you feel this way)_______. Although __________________, I feel that ___________ _____________________________________.

Setting a purpose for reading 1.Learn and practice reading strategy: Marking the text 2.Understand why reading is so connected to college success— 3.Understand what a study is— 4.Identify who sponsored the study 5.Identify the evidence (How do they know?) 6.Identify the conclusions and recommendations of the study

Pre-read Let’s look at the text before we read: What do you notice?

Essential Vocabulary Before we read, it is good to familiarize yourself with the vocabulary you’ll encounter.

Before we begin… It is VERY IMPORTANT that everyone gets a chance to read this section without feeling rushed. So, we maintain SILENCE during SILENT READING. If you finish early, read the section again to notice something you didn’t the first time.

Let’s read… Read paragraphs 1-5 silently Pair/Share: What did you notice? Discuss with your partner some things you noticed in the article.

Marking the text Marking the text is a way to isolate information in a text in order to understand it better. Marking has 3 parts: 1.Number the paragraphs 2.Circle key terms 3.Underline author’s claims (most important ideas)

Let’s number the paragraphs together… (Use a pencil! Use a pencil! Use a pencil!)

Read and Circle Key Terms A key term is a word or phrase that is very important to the meaning of the text. For the first time, let’s do this together. One of the things we look for is repeating words and repeating variations of words

Again, let’s read and underline main ideas We’re looking for the main idea of the article (AKA what it is trying to tell us), not details or examples. Let’s try this together

Let’s finish the article and try marking the text again. Here’s the process: Read the rest: What did you notice? Read/Circle terms Read/Underline main idea

First, read the rest without marking

Read/Circle terms This time, you do it. Tip! Do you see any repeating words or variations on the word (including the words we have already circled) Turn to Your Neighbor: Put your papers side by side and see if you circled the same things. If not, ask your partner, “Why did you circle that?”

Read and underline main ideas Prompt: Underline only where you see information about ACT and the study

So, how much of this did we answer? Understand why reading is so connected to college success— Understand what a study is— Identify who sponsored the study Identify the evidence (How do they know?) Identify the conclusions and recommendations of the study

After reflection After reading the text, my view of reading and its connection to school success ____________ changed for the following reasons: first, ______________________; and second, ________________________. This______________ my belief that _____ _____________________________. The most significant question this text raises for me is _____________________. Overall, this text taught me ___________.

3-part argument statement In “_______title of text______,” __author’s_ first and last name___ reports that _______ __________________________. According to the ACT report, ____________________ ______________________.

MLA citation In academic writing, it is very important to show where a text you are using came from. Citations are used to build a Works Cited page. Let’s go over the parts.
