Speaking Intensive Course Design Parameters: Syllabi are designed to improve speaking skills. Twenty percent or more of a student’s final grade must be from graded oral communication. Students must receive individual feedback on at least three speaking assignments over the course of the semester. Speaking opportunities must involve advance preparation of a student’s own thoughts (not script reading or dramatization). Enrollment is normally limited to 18 or less

Science ‘Journal Club’ Presentations from Molecular Genetics of Cancer Syllabus The presentation of scientific research is a highly structured endeavor - students should employ the following basic format: Introduction: What biological question is being addressed? What background information is absolutely necessary to understand this question? What were the major findings that were reported? (Note: for many types of talks, major findings would be reported later. The primary goal in presenting science is clarity, and it really helps to give away the “punch line” early!) Experiments: What experimental approach was taken, and what are the advantages and limitations of such an approach? What types of data were collected, and how do they look? (Note: the presentation and evaluation of the data is the most important component of a scientific presentation. Take the time to fully understand the data, and to clearly present this section of the talk.) Conclusions: What were the authors’ conclusions? Are such conclusions well supported by the data, or do they seem overstated? Are there other plausible explanations for the data? What would be the logical next-step experiments? (Note: this is your chance to be both critical and creative. Have fun with it!)

b. How will students be prepared for the assignments? Assignments and Assessment Directions in the syllabus and on handouts Tip sheets from previous classes Data presentation modeled by the instructor Students must meet with the instructor before 1 st presentation to go over their slides

c. How will students will be assessed on the assignments, and what form will feedback take? Assignments and Assessment Feedback and improvement: After each presentation, a written evaluation will be done by each of the students in the course - except the presenter(s). These evaluations should emphasize both the positive (what worked well) and the negative (how the speaker can improve for future presentations). I will summarize this information, add personal impressions, and provide these to the presenters in a timely fashion. Email the completed evaluations to me within 2 days of the presentation. Use the evaluation template in the ‘Presentations’ folder on Sakai to submit your comments, and be sure to include a suggested grade. Students / Instructor Assess Each Presentation
