Catalyst January 7(5-3), 2011 HW OUT! Check out the ‘graph’ to the right. Determine who the “Biggest Rapper Alive” is and back up with at least 2 reasons (must be from graph!).
3
Today’s Agenda Catalyst Go over yesterday’s Exit Question/HW Scientific Notation Quick! Practice Intro to Dimensional Analysis Work Time Group of the Week and Exit Question Book HW: Chapter 2 Assessment (p 50-51) Answer Qs 52-54, 58-59, 75-76, 79, 80a-e EXTRA CREDIT: Complete Page 53
4
Today’s Objectives SWBAT write numbers like a scientist/G. SWBAT convert units like it’s hot using dimensional analysis…because that’s what Gs do.
5
Analyze 1 of the 12 Testing Power Words! Example: Analyze the experimental data to formulate a conclusion. Analyze how the author uses personification. Break down Figure out Scrutinize Interpret
6
Exit Question Describe the accuracy (A) and precision (P) of 1 & 2. What prefix/unit would you use to measure the volume of cold drink in a can? What prefix/unit would you use to measure the length of your pinky?
7
Problem When scientists are talking about light wavelengths, they are usually discussing nanometers, which is 10 -9 meters or 0.00000001 meters. When scientists are talking about distances in space, they are usually discussing astronomical units (AU). 1 AU is 93,000,000 miles.
8
Problem I don’t know about you, but I ain’t about to write all them zeros. If only there was a way to fix this… SCIENTIFIC NOTATION!!!!
9
Notes – Scientific Notation Key Point #1 : Scientific notation is a way of abbreviating very large or very small numbers. 3.03 x 10 6 3 Parts! NumberPower of 10 Exponent
10
Scientific Notation Key Point #2: A number in correct scientific notation has only one non-zero number to the left of the decimal. 3.03 x 10 6
11
Big Numbers Scientific Notation Let’s get rid of them zeroes at the end! To do this, move the decimal point to the LEFT (to the left) 3 2 4 0 0 0 0 0.
12
Big Numbers Scientific Notation How many times do we move the decimal to the LEFT (to the left)? 3 2 4 0 0 0 0 0.
13
Big Numbers Scientific Notation …the decimal moves SEVEN times to the LEFT. 3.2 4 0 0 0 0 0
14
Big Numbers Scientific Notation So, how do we use that number 7??? 3.2 4 0 0 0 0 0x 10 7
15
Small Numbers Scientific Notation Let’s get rid of them zeroes at the front! To do this, move the decimal point to the RIGHT (to the right) 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 6.
16
Small Numbers Scientific Notation How many times did we move the decimal to the RIGHT (to the right)? 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 6.
17
Small Numbers Scientific Notation …the decimal moves SIX times to the RIGHT (to the right). 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 6.
18
Small Numbers Scientific Notation So how do we use that number 6???.0 0 0 2 6x 10 -6
19
Positive and Negative Exponents Key Point #3: If the number is BIG then the exponent is POSITIVE; if the number is small then the exponent is NEGATIVE.
20
Scientific Notation 2250000
21
Scientific Notation 2250000 2.25 x 10 6
22
Scientific Notation 10 300 000 000
23
Scientific Notation 10 300 000 000 1.03 x 10 10
24
Scientific Notation 0.000055
25
Scientific Notation 0.000055 5.5 x 10 -5
26
Scientific Notation 9870000 0.00000987
27
Scientific Notation 98700009.87 x 10 6 0.000009879.87 x 10 -6
28
Scientific Notation 8.1 x 10 3 9.4 x 10 -2
29
Scientific Notation 8.1 x 10 3 8100 9.4 x 10 -2 0.094
30
CONVERSIONS GET READY FOR AWESOME!
31
Convert it like it’s hot Key Point #3: A conversion factor shows the same value with two different units. YOU ALREADY KNOW THIS STUFF! Examples: 10 dimes= 1 dollar 20 nickels= 1 dollar 4 quarters= 1 dollar
32
Dimensional Analysis Key Point #4: Dimensional analysis is a tool used to convert from one unit to another.
33
Working on the Railroad Step 1: What to what? Step 2: Write conversion factor(s) Step 3: Train tracks
34
Practice! One-step problems. How many meters are in 10 centimeters? How many centimeters are in 327 meters?
35
Practice! On your own! The distance from New Orleans to Miami is 1387 kilometers (862 miles). Convert 1387 kilometers to meters!
36
Exit Question In July 2008, it was estimated that the world’s population is about 6,707,000,000. The United States’ population was estimated to be 304,060,000. The coldest temperature ever created by man is 0.000000005 Kelvin. Write the 3 bolded numbers in scientific notation. Book HW: Chapter 2 Assessment (p 50-51) Answer Qs 52-54, 58-59, 75-76, 79, 80a-e EXTRA CREDIT: Complete Page 53
