Important Dates Picture Day: tomorrow! Fall Festival: September 21 Conferences: October 8-11 (no school on October 12 th ) Harvest Hustle: October 19 Thanksgiving Break: November 16 – 23 Field Trips: in-house and in late May

Warm Up/Morning Work Daily 6-Trait Writing –Goal: All week, students plan for their writing using a specific trait and focusing on one convention skill. Students apply this to a writing prompt on Friday.

Spelling for Writers

Writing Workshop Mini-lessons that target a specific skill. This could be a “writing” skill such as how to choose a good idea, or a conventions/mechanics skill such as when to use capital letters. Independent writing time One-on-one writing conferences Publishing/sharing/celebrating Students will also complete writing prompts before each unit to help target instruction and after each unit as a writing assessment. Students will always be graded on their conventions and at least one trait.

Library Schedule Mrs. Potter ~ Tuesdays Mrs. Nadeau ~ Thursdays Mrs. MacMitchell-Mehan ~ Fridays Books are due each week on your child’s library day. Children may renew their books if they bring them to school.

Read Aloud and Snack Important part of the day! Students should bring a healthy snack –Goals – Listening skills Great way to model the reading strategies to our students using a common text Community building — we’re reading the same text in all 3 rd grade classrooms

What you will see in our classrooms: Large Group Instruction Building Reading Skills Vocabulary Instruction Reading Comprehension Strategies Small Group Instruction Students are reading text that is at their reading instructional level Teacher is continuing the whole-group reading comprehension strategy work at the small-group level Independent Work — Put First Things First! Students engaged in independent and meaningful tasks Daily 5 — includes reading and reflecting, content work (National Geographic, Leadership Workbook, Cursive Workbook, etc.), book group projects, spelling activities, Raz- Kids (computer reading program)

Lunch and Recess We go out to recess unless there is lightning and thunder, or if it’s under 15° F. Please send your child to school with appropriate clothing.

Math Expressions Lessons build on previous lessons Students have daily homework (except on weekends) Homework is posted on our classroom blogs Homework allows students to practice skills they learned in class that day, as well as review skills from past lessons Homework is corrected in class at the beginning of math each day Challenge Worksheets

Our third grade User Name is: svvsd3rd and our Password is password. Then click Login. When the page comes up, click on My Library, then click on Math Expressions Activity Book G3 (SE). Click on Volume 1 or 2, then click on the lesson number (this will be in the “Math Homework” section of our blog, or on your child’s math homework). Our class lesson pages will come up. If you click Lesson Resources, you will find our homework and other practice.

Math Facts Our school-wide third grade goal is for students to master their multiplication and division facts 0 – 10 by May. –How can I help my child with this? Multiplication/division math games Flash cards (you’ll be getting these tonight!) Skip-counting objects at home, at the grocery store, etc.

Homework… Planners Homework Folders Thursday Folders Reading Logs (weekly) Spelling (weekly with a test on Friday) Math (daily except weekends) Leadership (monthly) Friday Fun/Work Room allows your child to practice skills presented in class, and challenges them by introducing concepts they might not have seen before. It also develops their work ethic, responsibility and important habits of mind.

TCAP Our reading test is in February, and our math and writing tests are in March. Our students have the skills they need to do well on these tests! We try our best to make this a time of low-stress. We ask parents to donate special snacks, we have extra recesses and do not assign homework.
