1
THE KINGDOMS Phylum away in your brain in the proper order. Then, class, you’ll be a lot of fungis.
2
The Seven Levels of Classification Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
3
The Six Kingdoms Archaebacteria Eubacteria Animalia Plantae Fungi Protista
4
Carolus Linnaeus Swedish doctor and botanist who lived in the 1700s The first taxonomist Taxonomy is the science of identifying, classifying, and naming living things
5
Taxonomy Linnaeus- organized living things based on shared characteristics In modern taxonomy, evolutionary relationships are also used (common ancestors) Branching diagrams show which organisms are more closely related
6
Prokaryotes- organisms that do not have a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles –Bacteria –Means “before kernel” or “before nucleus” Eukaryotes- organisms that have a nucleus and membrane bound organelles –The other 4 kingdoms
7
Reproduction Asexual reproduction- organism replicates itself by budding or dividing. Only one organisms is involved. Sexual reproduction- male and female parents involved.
8
2 Bacteria Kingdoms Prokaryotes (no nucleus) Asexual or sexual reproduction ARCHAEBACTERIA –Means “ancient” –Live in places where most organisms could not survive –Hot springs, ocean depths EUBACTERIA –Most of the other thousands of bacteria –Live in soil, water, on and inside the human body –Some bacteria can be helpful, some are harmful
9
Kingdom Protista “Catch all” kingdom Single celled or multicellular Eukaryotes (they have a nucleus) All eukaryotes that are not plants, animals, or fungi Can receive nutrients many different ways Sexual or asexual reproduction Many different kinds of organisms Algae, protozoa, slime molds, Euglena, Paramecium, Amoeba
10
Kingdom Plantae Multicellular Eukaryotes Sexual reproduction Normally green Receive nutrients by photosynthesis –Use the sun’s energy to make sugar
11
Kingdom Fungi Multicellular Eukaryotes Sexual and asexual reproduction, different phases of life cycle Do not do photosynthesis! Do not eat food! Absorb nutrients from surroundings and break down with digestive juices
12
Kingdom Animalia Multicellular Eukaryotes Sexual reproduction Most can move from place to place Nervous system to sense and react to surroundings No cell walls like plants, most protists, and bacteria
13
