1 UNIT & LESSON PLANS AN OVERALL CONCEPT TAUGHT IN 2-3 WEEKS

2 LET’S REVIEW… We have talked about getting the job …MANY responsibilities We have pondered our classroom rules …Let’s chat about Thompson, Chapter 2 …Review Classroom Mistakes, p. 18 – 21 aloud What about your classroom? Rules…set up for success…

3 ORGANIZING CONTENT: THE TEXTBOOK No, we do not teach to the textbook, HOWEVER, textbook = organization

4 Let’s review that… o For most subjects, you can move around the textbook (Science, Health) o For other subjects, it can be beneficial to use the order of the material presented in the textbook (Math, Social Studies) o In English, often you will move all over the textbook based on your design of your unit.

5 INTERCURRICULAR TEACHING Some subjects may cohort…work together English/Social Studies = Paul Revere’s Ride during the study of the Revolutionary War.

6 MY EXPECTATION FOR YOUR UNIT PLAN 1. Title of Unit 2. Dates to be taught (1 – 3 weeks) You will be writing 10 lesson plans w/in this unit. 3. General subunits (Oceanography = The Seafloor, Life in the Ocean, Ocean Pollution 4. CCSS, Social Studies, or Next Generation Science Standards to be met in this unit (You will copy these from your lesson plans) 5. Any special supplies or unique needs for this unit Consider students with special needs. Be sure to include a variety of activities (audio, visual, kinesthetic) to encourage student learning. 7 LESSON PLANS FOR THIS CLASS You will use lesson plan from Cunningham. The back of the book has an excellent description. Will be posted on your wiki. Refer to worksheets/tests, but you do not have to make them.

8 INTRODUCTION ….TICKLER! Get them excited about what is going to happen today. Quick…fun or though provoking

9 FOUNDATION Check on previous knowledge. Verify what students already know. Clarify key points. Double-check on learning from the past.

10 BRAIN ACTIVATION Brainstorm main ideas. Fill students' heads with ideas, concepts, possibilities

11 BODY OF NEW INFORMATION Can do this through short lecture, powerpoint, create foldables…. Need to keep the students interested…

12 CLARIFICATION Quick check for understanding…. Ask a few questions….for those that can’t answer, let them choose a lifeline

13 PRACTICE AND REVIEW Do the first few questions together….. Have questions on PPT…let them respond individually to parts of it Provide “helps” – cheat sheet

14 EG: ORDER OF OPERATIONS P – Parenthesis E – Exponents M – Multiplication/Division A – Addition/Subtraction 3[ 8 3 + (16-1) * (2*5)] 14 * 2 5

15 INDEPENDENT PRACTICE SUPERVISE THIS!!!! Do not…do not…go and sit at your desk! OBSERVE…this is a way to assess knowledge.

16 CLOSURE This is hard to do…may run out of time. Have students show work to use as they leave. Have students complete a slip of paper telling you what they learned today. Keep it small and quick… REMIND THEM TO HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!!! And then move into the hallway to monitor behavior…

17 LET’S GET STARTED ON OUR PLANS….. 1.Set up Wiki - check 2.Get a textbook of your choice 3.Begin Unit Plan 4.Begin Lesson Plans

18 AND WHILE YOU ARE DOING THAT… We will not be having class next week in order to concentrate on creating an iMovie/Moviemaker about yourself that will introduce yourself to your students. Parameters:  It should be no more than 4 minutes long.  It should have music. Please attach it to your wiki. And…as a reminder to me to remind you…I still need to be invited to join some wikis.
