3 June 4, 1942 On June 4, 1942, Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto decides to put an air base on Midway Island. While the Americans were trying to bomb the base, Japan was fighting back, this famous battle started. On June 4, 1942, Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto decides to put an air base on Midway Island. 4 The 3 lost carriers The next day, the Americans launched squadrons of airplanes at 9:30 a.m. and found Kaga, Soryu, and, Akagi. Three carriers of Adm. Tamon Yamaguchi of the Japanese Navy. When Yamaguchi’s carrier(Akagi) was bombed, he was killed and Vice Adm. Chiuchi Nagumo took his place. 6 The search for the lost carrier On June 7, 1942, Americans were in search of the Japanese carrier Hiryu. American dive bombers found the Hiryu, bombed, and sunk it.
