The Trash in the Pacific By Max Haworth
2
The world's Largest Land-fill isn't on LAND, it's in the middle of the ocean!
3
In the Pacific ocean – If you were to scoop cup of water the ratio of plastic to plankton is 6-1 – Americans throw out 694 plastic bottles per second. That’s 60 million a day! Over time, plastic becomes brittle and breaks apart into tiny pellets called “nurdles” or “mermaid tears.” Wildlife that eat the pellets can sicken or die.
4
Key Element That is Contributing to the Problem Plastic Plastic waste blown into ocean Plastic Photo degrades instead of bio-degrading (stays in its same form for decades) Cannot be digested by marine life and marine birds (chokes and suffocates them)
5
Albatross a Common Victim to plastic in the Pacific
6
Ghost fishing Birds eat the plastic in the ocean mistaking for plankton It then regurgitates the plastic to its children Kills the whole family. And this process is repeated and repeated creating a dangerous cycle for sea birds in the pacific.
7
Solutions (The 3 R's and more) Reduce the purchase of items with lots of plastic packaging Recycling plastic after use Reuse Plastic Water Bottles Spread the word, tell a friend so that more and more people do this, because we all need to do our part in order to impact this issue
