Reading Strategy 1 Use Your Eagle Eye! Presented by the Londonderry Kindergarten Team
3
Use Your Eagle Eye! Good readers use their “Eagle Eye” to look at the pictures when they read. The picture can help you figure out a tricky word.
4
Isn’t it cheating? They can’t really read the word. Children should be encouraged to use the whole book when reading. Connects the meaning of the text to the meaning of the picture. Think about it—pictures, charts, graphs, and maps carry meaning.
5
I see the fish.
6
I see the shark.
7
I see the starfish.
8
What can you do? Before you read—have your child look through the book and talk about what they see. During reading—If your child gets stuck on a word, direct them to use their “Eagle Eye” to figure it out. Praise your child when you notice they used their “Eagle Eye”. Remind them, it is what good readers do!
