A flood is an overflowing of water beyond its confines. It usually floods onto land.

Heavy rainfall Bodies of water do not have enough capacity to hold all of the water when it rains heavily, and it overflows.

Meteorologists tell by: How wide an area is getting rain How long its been raining How fast the storm is How hard rain is coming down

They are measured by how high the water gets by some kind of measurement tool.

They are not measured by a scale.

Flash floods can occur in just minuets or hours.

1. Avoid building in a floodplain 2. Construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering your house 3. Seal walls in basement 4. Listen to radio or television for more info on the flood 5. Know the difference from a flood watch and a flood warning
