CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES Solubility
2
SCIENCE STARTER Work silently and individually on your Science Starter You have 3 minutes
3
OBJECTIVES SWBAT – Identify the different types of homogeneous mixtures – Identify the factors that affect solubility
4
AGENDA Science Starter Demonstration Worksheet
5
DEMONSTRATION
6
Homogenous Mixture The 3 mixtures are examples of Homogenous Mixture. Homogeneous mixture being one that is uniform throughout. Take 1 minutes to fill in the table
7
Transparent or Opaque Sugar Water – transparent Milk – Opaque Chalk in water - Opaque
8
Separate or not? Sugar Water – No Milk – No Chalk in water - Yes
9
Light Beams Through? Sugar Water - yes Milk - yes Chalk in water - no
10
TYPES OF HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE Sugar Water – Solution Milk – Colloid Chalk in water - Suspension
11
Physical Properties of Mixtures Properties of Mixture can determine what separation method to use
12
Properties of Mixtures Density Particle Size Boiling Point Freezing Point Solubility
13
The amount of substance that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent This is a quantitative term
14
Solubility Solution = solute in solvent Solute = the substance being dissolved Solvent = the substance doing the dissolving
15
You Try It Given Sugar Water – Identify the solute – Identify the solvent – Identify the solution
16
Example Sugar Water – Solvent = water – Solute = sugar – Solution = Sugar Water
17
Degree of Solubility How much solute will dissolve in a certain amount of liquid at a given temperature Unsaturated – solution below the limit Saturate – solution is at its limit Supersaturate – solution that exceeds it saturation limit
18
SUPERSATURATED A Solution can exceed its saturation limit by increasing the temperature However, the solution is not stable and the extra solute will normally crystallized when the solution cools.
19
SOLUBILITY CURVE Graph used to identify the saturation limit – On the Line – saturated – Under the line – unsaturated – Above the line - supersaturated
20
You try it Given the Solubility Curve for water, identify when the solution is undsaturated, saturated or supersaturated.
22
Solubility Curve The Solubility Curve may vary for different solute
