1 Unit 4: Waves and Sound In this unit you will be able to: 1.Study the behavior of vibrating objects and measure their frequency, period, wavelength and speed 2.Differentiate between transverse and longitudinal waves and observe their reflection, refraction and diffraction 3.Determine the result of two waves interfering and describe the principles of mechanical resonance and standing waves 4.Describe and understand sound and its production, transmission, reflection, speed, and intensity 5.Describe various topics such as beat frequency, the Doppler Effect, and supersonic travel 6.Identify and explain properties of vibrating strings and air columns Bowling Ball Pendulum Bowling Ball Pendulum – you will be able to explain this!!!

2 a wave is a transfer of energy over a distance in the form of a disturbance an example of a wave that we deal with on a daily basis is sound waves sound waves originate from a vibrating object periodic motion is motion that occurs when the vibration (oscillation) of an object is repeated in equal time intervals. Waves and Vibrations

3 The three basic types of vibrations are : 1.transverse vibration object vibrates perpendicular to it’s axis i.e. swing or pendulumswingpendulum 2. longitudinal vibration object vibrates parallel to it’s axis i.e. pogo stick or springpogo stick 3. torsional vibration object twists around it’s axis i.e. spinning yo-yo

4 Measuring vibration : cycle – one complete vibration
