Abigail is a master manipulator; although she does not conform to the Puritan ways, she does disguise her identity in public. She is the ultimate example of an individual conforming to avoid persecution. Puritans believed that their actions were a reflection of their purpose on earth; by disobeying said purpose, they were punished. Abigail threatens the girls in the beginning of Act I by saying: “I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” (Miller, 19). This is clearly not “Puritan” behavior, but when she addresses the rest of the town she says, “I want the sweet love of Jesus!” (Miller, 45). Abigail’s ability to disguise her identity in order to conform is a perfect example of how much pressure was put onto the Puritans….
