PHILIPPINES Filipinos rebel against US rule after war Aguinaldo will lead rebels in a 3 year war that will cost the US 4,000 soldiers and $400 million European powers and Japan had established spheres of influence in China Sec. of State John Hay proposes the Open Door Policy which called for sharing trade rights in China

4. 1900, secret Chinese group called The Boxers rebel against all foreigners US and other powers put down the Boxer Rebellion Open Door Policy reflects 3 beliefs that will be the basis for US foreign policy: –Growth of economy was dependant upon exports –US had the right to intervene to keep foreign markets open –Felt closing of an area to US ideas, goods, or people threatened our survival
