1 Interesting Cincinnati Facts Cincinnati has had the most US Presidents call a city home in history –William Henry Harrison, Ulysses Grant, Benjamin Harrison, Rutherford B. Hayes, and William Howard Taft John Quincy Adams was the first president to visit Cincinnati –Came to see the telescope in Mt. Ida –Mt. Ida became Mt. Adams after the President’s visit

2 Cincinnati is the only city named after a Roman hero –In 1942, Mussolini gave the city a statue of Romulus and Remusin which is now located in the Overlook at Eden Park

3 City Government In the 1880s the city was run by a corrupt Republican political machine headed by “Boss” Cox Today the city votes on a city council to make most important decisions In 1999 citizens began voting directly for the mayor –Prior mayors were appointed by the council or winner of council vote became mayor

4 Mark Mallory is the current mayor of Cincinnati Jerry Springer and Charlie Luken have been mayor of the city at one time –Both would become anchors of local news programs on WLWT (Channel 5) –Springer would go on to become a pop culture icon in the 1990s with The Jerry Springer Show

6 Race Relations Cincinnati has had a strong history of race relations dating back to the real Underground Railroad Today, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is located in Cincinnati In 2001, riots broke out downtown after Timothy Thomas, a young black man, was shot by a white police officer Steven Roach

7 The riots were small, lasted about two days, and caused about $3.6 million in damage African American entertainers boycotted the city after the incident costing the city about $10 million. After the riots crime in Cincinnati increased after being at its lowest point in 10 years

8 Businesses Besides P&G, there are several other businesses that call Cincinnati home: –Kroger –Sunny Delight –GE Aviation –Macy’s –Kao Corporations –Fifth Third Bank –Chiquita Brands

9 Cincinnati has 10 Fortune 500 companies, 18 Fortune 1000 companies, and 4 Global 500 companies –(GE, Kroger, Proctor & Gamble, & Macy’s) The University of Cincinnati is the city’s largest employer followed by Kroger

10 Education Cincinnati opened Clark Montessori, the first Montessori High School in the United States Walnut Hills is part of the Cincinnati Public School system and rated the 38 th best public high school in the nation Hamilton County has the second largest private school attendance in the nation

11 The Cincinnati area is home to several colleges and universities –University of Cincinnati –Cincinnati State University –Xavier University –Cincinnati State –College of Mount St. Joseph –Wilmington College –Northern Kentucky University In 2009, Cincinnati was rated the 4 th best city in the country for recent graduates

12 Culture Cincinnati is host to many festivals and events throughout the year –Cincinnati Flower Show –Oktoberfest (largest in the country) –Taste of Cincinnati –Tall Stacks –Festival of Lights –WEBN Riverfest Fireworks

13 Chili Cincinnati has been called the “Chili Capital of the World” because of all the chili restaurants located in the city –Skyline, Goldstar, Price Hill, Empress, and Dixie Chili are all favorites in the area Cincinnati style chili is unique as it is made as a “3-Way” with cheese and chili over spaghetti

14 Entertainment Many movies have taken place or were filmed in Cincinnati –Rain Man –Shawshank Redemption –Airborne –Batman Forever –Traffic –Wild Hogs

15 The television show WKRP in Cincinnati took place in the city

16 Many musicians and bands have their roots in the city –Nick Lachey (98 Degrees) –Bootsy Collins (Parliamentary Funkadelic) –James Brown –Afghan Whigs –Over the Rhine –Blessed Union of Souls –The National –Heartless Bastards –Dj Hi-Tek

17 The Midpoint Music Festival has grown to become one of the top Indie music showcases in the Midwest Scribble Jam has become a festival that celebrates everything in the hip hop culture –Eminem, Rhymefest, and Sage Francis are rappers who have participated in the various battles at Scribble Jam
