Common Core Standard: W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to convey information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. Objective: Students will learn and apply business letter format to task 2, writing a business letter giving clear information and analysis of a narrative. EQ: What are the business letter formats and what length and tone should a business letter be?

A business letter is a formal correspondence about a business-related matter. Examples: to apply for a job, to complain about poor service in a store, to request information. What is a business letter?

Your tone should be formal and respectful and your language should follow the conventions of standard English. NO: slang, “How you doin’?” NO: over-familiarity, “Lots of Love, “ What tone should a business letter have?

You may choose: Block Format: All 6 parts of the letter align at the left-hand margin Modified Block Format: The heading, closing, and signature are placed on the right-hand side of the page. What are the business letter formats?

Business people are busy. State your purpose for writing in the opening of your letter. Get to your point right away. Usually, no more than a page. How long should it be?

In the body, state your major points. Provide any necessary information the reader will need. What goes in the body?

Close the letter formally with a phrase such as “Sincerely yours” or “Yours truly” NO: “See you later” or “Love” How do I end it?
