11. Essential vs. Nonessential essential If something is essential, what is it? Essential Essential : required or necessary nonessential The suffix non- makes the word nonessential the opposite of essential. Nonessential Nonessential : not required or necessary

12. Nonessential Clause Nonessential clause: Use commas before and after nonessential clauses that interrupt a sentence without changing the essential meaning. Nonessential clauses will tell you more information about the subject Which is a signal word for nonessential clauses. The novel, which I really enjoyed, deserves a second read. 19. Introductory Paragraphs “THE BEGINNING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE WORK.” ~PLATO

20. Functions of an Introductory Paragraph  Informs the reader what the issue is that the writer will be discussing. The introduction tells what the essay is about.  Presents background information that may be necessary to help explain what the issue is  Presents the writer’s main conclusion/THESIS  Provides the reader with a road map of the essay so that they know what to expect  An outline of how your argument will go on

21. Not Included in an Introductory Paragraph  No explanation of arguments ! The introduction is not a place to provide detailed explanations of your supporting details because these explanations will occur in your body paragraphs.  Do not tell your audience what you are going to do. “I am going to tell you this…”

The Parts of the Introductory Paragraph  The Hook - Designed to grab attention immediately and give some indication about the essay’s topic  The Transition - Moves the reader from the hook to the driving force of the essay…. 24. Personal Examples  Provides strong, dramatic incidents to use. Honesty in expressing thoughts and feelings will ring true with the reader. While you can make up the personal experience, be careful that it sounds credible.  Personal observation - different from a personal example, an observation is something you saw happening.

25. On Friday, February 19, 2011, life changed for an eighteen-year-old young man. He became very ill from a bacterial infection. His body could not fight the infection. Why? After a week of tests and examinations by several specialists, the diagnosis was made. He had leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow. I am that young man. When a person finds out that he has cancer, just as I did, his whole world changes. A cancer patient is affected physically, psychologically, and socially by the impact of cancer. Example

This thought by John Milton was recorded over four hundred years ago, but it is still timely for us today. He seems to be saying that we are the ones to control our lives. We can be miserable when things are going well, just as we can be happy when things are going wrong. With this thought in mind, we can control the way we face life through our attitude, our determination, and our ability.

29. Example  According to an article in Family Safety & First Aid, published by Berkley Books, “… every 45 seconds a fire breaks out in an American home – 700,000 residences aflame each year. And 16 times a day somebody dies in one of these burning homes” (45). These statistics are frightening and should not be taken lightly. The best way to deal with the possibility of loss from fire is to plan ahead before it happens. Otherwise, it is too late. In order not to become one of these statistics, Americans need to equip their homes with safety devices, set and adhere to safety rules, and practice a family escape plan in order to protect their families.

30. Consider This Introduction In my essay, I am going to tell you about the importance of an introductory paragraph. My first reason introductory paragraphs are important is because they include important information to guide the audience, such as main ideas and thesis. My second body paragraph will tell you about how the introduction functions as the outline for the reader to know where the writer is going with their ideas. Third, my final point is that introduction paragraphs engage the audience by including a hook because without the hook the readers will not be interested in the writing. These are the reasons why the introduction is important to have. Clear Thesis?Interesting lead? Outline of main ideas?

31. According to many writing experts, the introductory paragraph is considered to be the most difficult component of an essay to compose. Introductory paragraphs include vital information to guide the reader. Additionally, the introduction works as an outline of the writer’s argument, and includes an engaging hook to entice the audience to continue reading the composition. Therefore, writers should craft strong, detailed introduction paragraphs because this paragraph is the seed from which their writing will grow.

Body Paragraphs  Contain topic sentences – sentences that introduce the paragraph and its connection to your thesis statement.  Provided support for your thesis – this can be in examples, quotes, statistics, etc.  Connect back, through elaboration, to the thesis statement and the introductory paragraph.
