Face into the composition to create a sight line that keeps the viewer involved. “Walk” into the photograph visually. Although the photo, above, is “prettier”, the composition suffers from the position of the child – she is leaving the frame. If she had been on the left side of the setting sun, it would have been a much better shot.

Up close and personal – don’t be afraid to crop to get a better shot.

Picturing an imaginary nine-space grid is a tried-and-true way of improving the composition – some cameras include this as a framing aid
