4. Archetypical Roles Santiago: Santiago: 1. Mentor – teacher to Manolin. 2. Hero – the book follows his experiences Manolin: Manolin: 1. Pupil – learns everything from Santiago. 2. Loyal Retainer – takes care of Santiago, no matter what and would do anything for him.

Similar Relationships Hercules & Phil: Hercules & Phil: –In the Disney classic Hercules, Hercules is taught everything he knows about fighting (his livelihood, for all intents and purposes) by Phil. Phil is the Mentor (and an angry half- goat) and Hercules is the Pupil. However in this case, Phil would be the Loyal Retainer, whereas Manolin was the LR of his mentor.

Similar Relationships (Cont’d) Jiminy Cricket & Geppetto Jiminy Cricket & Geppetto –In a new take on an old story (ABC’s Once Upon a Time), Jiminy Cricket is the guardian and conscience of Geppetto. He helps him from childhood, and advises him in his actions. As this particular episode was all about Jiminy, he was the Hero and Geppetto would become the LR. Jiminy Cricket was also the Mentor and Geppetto the Pupil.
