Chapter 13 “The Behavior of Gases”
2
Chemistry Joke Oops! I spilled water on my homework.
3
Kinetic Molecular Theory
Gases are hard, spherical particles that: Have insignificant volume. Are not attracted to or repelled by each other. Move randomly in straight paths. Experience elastic collisions with complete transfer of kinetic energy
4
Variables that Describe a Gas
The four variables and their common units: 1. pressure (P) in kilopascals - kPa 2. volume (V) in Liters - L 3. temperature (T) in Kelvin - K 4. amount (n) in moles - mol How are each of these variables related to each other?
5
Boyle’s Law Pressure goes up, volume goes down; Pressure goes down, volume goes up Equation: P1V1 = P2V2
6
Graph of Boyle’s Law
7
Charles’s Law The volume of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to the Kelvin temperature, when pressure is held constant.
9
The Combined Gas Law The combined gas law expresses the relationship between pressure, volume and temperature of a fixed amount of gas.
10
Chemistry Joke “Due to budget cuts, science and health will both taught by the chemistry teacher… Oops!
