Baucis and Philemon By: Jeff & Amy

Summary  Zeus and Hermes got bored and wanted to see how hospitable the people of Phrygia were.  Disguised themselves and poor travelers  Every one told them to “Get Lost You Bums”  Came to an old lovers house (Baucis and Philemon) who was really poor. Their roof was made out of straw and reeds but it was clean and cozy inside  Welcomed Zeus and Hermes in and offered them dinner and wine.  While drinking the couple soon realized that the wine bottle was never getting emptier.

 From this they deducted that there guests were not mere beggars.  The couple felt bad they didn’t have much to offer so they then offered them a goose to cook up and eat.  After the meal Zeus and Hermes revealed themselves and rewarded the couple with a temple with gold ceilings and marble pillars.  Zeus and Hermes also punished the less hospitable villagers.  They also made it so Baucis and Philemon would never be without each other even in death.  When they died their bodies grew out of a linden tree and an oak tree.

Similarities  Beauty & the Beast  The old women asking for his hospitality and she would give him a rose.  Denied her offer and was punished for the way she was treated.

Reference  This is the scene of when the old couple was trying to satisfy their guests by catching a goose for them to eat.
