1 BT Project News About Oxfam and Zimbabwe

2 About the Zimbabwe Crisis. Zimbabwe is gradually rising out of a severe political and humanitarian crisis characterised by a 10 year old economic collapse. The crisis reached its peak in 2008 when unprecedented hyperinflation, poor agricultural production, and a huge degradation of basic social services in about 7 million people needing emergency food assistance. The first round of elections in March 2008 followed by violence which led to internal displacement and from August that year the country experienced a debilitating cholera epidemic that had a result of more than 4,000 deaths. In February 2009, Zimbabwe started a new inclusive Government of National Unity to help stop poverty and to improve the economy. The government since than has improved and there is operating space for civil society, enabling access to vulnerable communities. In 2009, the use of multiple currencies was introduced and inflation levels started to fall. Notable improvements were noticed in the availability of food and other basic consumables. In 2010, humble economic growth and stabilisation continued. The agriculture sector, which is the base of Zimbabwe's economy, has shown remarkable improvement, but industrial productivity remains poor. Most industries are operating below the production capacity because of power shortages and the scarcity of essential imported inputs. Civil servants are underpaid and the quality of services in the health and education remains scarcely low. Water and sanitation facilities are dilapidated and there is a small shortage of chemicals to treat major water stock points. While there have been enhancements and relative stability in the country, the delicacy of the situation at a political level remains apparent, particularly as the country is undergoing the constitution- making process and moves closer to anticipated elections.

3 How Oxfam Helps All over the globe, Oxfam has helped many people to lift themselves out of poverty. They save lives and help rebuild livelihoods for humans who suffer from poverty and other causes. One in three people in this world live in poverty. They strive to stop the poverty in this world. Poor people don’t have a chance to control their lives, or solve their own problems, but they can do all those things with the right support. Oxfam fund on projects around the world, to give the poor a water system, a sanitation system, and a health and education system, to help them have a chance to earn money, live a healthier lifestyle and learn all they need to learn. In the last years, Oxfam has made great progress in shaping a more better world, helping children from domestic violence. They have cut back poverty by about fifty percent in the last ten years. They have reduced the amount of children dying in the years and have given an education system to the people of Zimbabwe. Australian Aid has helped in many ways to provide sources in the poverty world to make the people better. Australia have been supporting the third world countries to be a kind and caring country to provide a well balanced and good quality education system and food and water to the poor. It’s a very important thing to be able to live happily, and not worried about their safety all the time, so you need to donate now, to give enough money to save and help these peoples lives who live sadly live in a lack of food, water and a home.

4 What Systems do Zimbabwe Need to Survive? Water Irrigation- the Zimbabwe people need the water to grow crops and drink to survive. They need the water to help them out when there is a drought or a natural disaster to provide a source of water and clean water to drink and grow food to sell and receive money to pay medical bills. Health- Zimbabwe people need the health system to survive, health keeps people up and going, and to get to your crops to get food. The health system provides food, medicine and a healthy household, that will usually be covered so the wind wont be able to come to the person and effect them even more and make them more sick. Sanitation- the Zimbabweans need a sanitation system because otherwise they will fall ill and may get fatal diseases. The sanitation system will provide a specially organised medical person to cure to many diseases and sicknesses. Education- Zimbabwe needs proper education especially for woman and children. An education system provides a lifelong opportunities to learn and be educated by the lessons they need to be a fairly smart human who knows about a series of things.
