FUNGI
2
KINGDOM FUNGI Important characteristics Eukaryotic- have a nucleus Use spores to reproduce Heterotrophs Some unicellular, some are multicellular Decomposers: break down dead organisms to return nutrients to the soil
3
STRUCTURE Hyphae: threadlike structures that are used to break down food Fruiting Body: produce spores Cell wall made of chitin
4
FUNGI NUTRITION The fungus grows hyphae into the food source Digestive chemical ooze from the hyphae into the food The digestive chemicals break down the food The broken down food is absorbed into hyphae
5
REPRODUCTION ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION: Fungus produces spores (tiny reproductive cell) in a structure called a fruiting body Fungus releases spores into the air Carried by wind, water, small animals If there are the proper conditions the spores will become new fungi Proper conditions include: temp, water, and food
6
CLASSIFICATION 4 GROUPS BASED ON SHAPE AND SPORE PRODUCTION Threadlike- Molds Sac- Yeast Club- Mushroom Imperfect- Penicillin
