AusVELS Levels: 5&6 Year: 2014 Term: 3 Duration of Unit: Lessons 7 3 of 7: Poetic words and lines

I understand how authors play with language features to achieve particular purposes and effects.

(Supply a range of texts including poetry, fiction and non-fiction) Have students: Sit with a two partners and treasure hunt for poetic lines or words in the books Write them down and discuss with partners why they are poetic Share - with the class –why did you choose this? How did it ‘speak to you?’

Word Scramble (directions) Work in groups of 3 Write words on coloured cards (a different coloured card each word category – Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Colours, Small words, Endings, Prepositions/Cohesive Ties) Lay words out so you can see them all. Create a poem using some of these words. Create a second poem.

Teacher: select a group’s poem and read it a few times, each time placing a space or line break in different places.

Students: create a third poem, this time leaving a range of spaces between words or groups of words.

Each student use cards to create and record their own poem.

Rocket writing – Today I found out ……….. I really liked ………..because ……….. I’m still not too sure about ……….. I could teach someone else to ………..
