MACBETH UNIT – DAY 5 Answer these on a piece of paper to be turned in before you leave: 1. (a) In your opinion, who is more responsible for Duncan’s murder—Macbeth or Lady Macbeth? (b) Why? 2. (a) Why do you think Shakespeare chose to have the murder of Duncan occur offstage rather than in front of the audience? (b) If the murder had occurred onstage, how do you think the audience would feel about Macbeth?

MACBETH UNIT – DAY 5 In Act 2, Scene 2, Macbeth murders King Duncan. Scene 3 begins with a bit of comic relief as the drunken Porter (the gatekeeper) hears knocking at the gate. Read “Building Background” on p. 337 to better understand the humor here.

MACBETH UNIT – DAY 5 Read Act II, Scenes 3 and 4. Rewrite Malcolm and Donalbain’s lines on p. 348 (lines 130 – 143) to sound more modern. Use the sidenotes to help you translate the English of Shakespeare’s day. You may work with a partner. Turn in when completed.
